Aruna passed away 42 years later, 8:30am local time. She had pnemonia two weeks back and later suffered cardiac arrest said Dr.Anvinash Supe, dean at the King Edward memorial Hospital.
She was put in a ventilator, fed in a tube during this time.
You may wonder why she was kept alive for so long,
The story became public when Pinki Virani, a Mumbai author and jorunalist wrote a book about Shanbaug's Story and on March 7th 2011, appealed to the Supreme court in india, to grant Shanbaug passive euthanasia which was illegal in the country at that time.
The Supreme court rejected her petition praising the hospital for taking care of Shanbaug.
Walmiki Served a seven year term of assault and robbery but was never convicted of sexual assault as sodomy was not considered rape at time in India.
Later that same year, the supreme court legalized passive euthanasia, subject to restrictions.
Tributes from different caliber of persons flooded the social network.
Virani told CNN that "The greatest irony is that it was because of her that euthanasia was passed and she never benefited from it".
