DIY: Herbs For Healthy Hair and Scalp

I have seen a lot of videos and articles about herbs that promoted hair growth and strength. Unfortunately, a lot of those herbs mentioned in the articles are not grown in my country Nigeria.

This prompted to search on home-grown herbs that are beneficial to my hair and scalp.

Here is a list of my favorites.

Neem (Dongoyaro, Azadirachta indica)
I love Neem, for everything except its taste. it is very bitter. It has been a traditional herb for treating malaria, flu, fever, acne and other skin conditions and can even serve as a insecticide.
For  the sake of my post title, i will talk about it benefits to hair and scalp.
Neem is an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory herb. i say it is anti-septic also because it has so much healing benefits.I have used it a lot of times and it worked wonders for me as a dandruff treatment oil
It is an effective natural remedy for

  • hair loss,
  • allergy,
  • baldness
  • treating all scalp related problems, like dandruff
  • conditioning under-nourished hair
  • enhancing hair growth.
African Clove Basil (Nchuanwu, Efinrin, Ntonng, Daidayo, Ocimum gratissimum

This leave has taken over the backyard of my house. once the wind blows and the seed falls off, it just starts to grow on the next available space. rainy season is its best time to germinate.
The availability of this herb around me gave me more room to discover it benefits.
African Clove Basil is very medicinal. it has been found useful in treating ailments, skin irritation in children, stomach ulcers, cough, etc. its just too many.

Amongst its too many health benefits, it is known in hair care for
  • treating hair thinning
  • treating hair breakage
  • treating dandruff
  • promoting hair growth.
Ginger Roots:
It is an antiseptic and anti-oxidant herb. it increases circulation of hair molecules, stimulates blood flow to the scalp thereby promoting stronger and faster growth. it is also good for treating dandruff.
One more secret for a type 4c hair. If you've got split ends, try using ginger juice on your hair.

Aloe Vera:
It contains proteolytic enzymes that destroy dead cells. it promotes hair growth, reduced itching and conditions the hair. It cleanses, nourishes and protects hair from damage.

Hibiscus:

Whenever I hear Hibiscus, I used to think, flower, Zobo drink, hair dye. I have not really experienced any other special use or benefit so hibiscus.
Keeping the above in mind, Hibiscus has dying property which makes it very good for warding off premature graying. It makes a very nutritious natural juice/drink with ginger. Since it contains vitamins and anti-oxidants, it would improve scalp and hair health.

And there you have it.

These are just a few of my favorites. there a lot more.
