How Pure is the Coconut Oil You Buy?

Over the years, I have developed the habit of reading the label of what I buy. As a chemist by academics, I know what to expect in checking the purity of some substances.

Getting pure virgin coconut oil in market is very difficult because;

One can not really tell the physical difference between vegetable oil and pure coconut oil.

Majority of coconut marketers/sellers display a lot of oil in one bottle for some very cheap price and consumers have gotten use to buying it that way.
When the real thing gets in, it would be quite difficult to sell because of the cost different.

I used to extract coconut oil for my personal used but now I'm starting to go commercial.

I took a sample of my first products to two different retail shop. Their response was overwhelming negatively.

Assuming the total cost of extraction 200ml of coconut oil is 1800 Naira ($10). This cost is before packaging and the a profit is included.

The retail shops i visited showed me a coconut oils sample  that is supplied to them. 700 ml at 1000 Naira

Now you understand it when I say it is overwhelming negatively. I was left with convincing them that what I have is genuine.
They told that they have established their market and it would be difficult to convince their customers about the price difference.

One of the sales person opened the two different coconut oil samples and smell them. Now we are talking about the (physical characteristics according to the sales person)

Odor: The different is that adulterated coconut oil contains artificial coconut flavored scent that oozes out as soon as you open the container. The pure coconut oil allows your sense of smell to savor the flavor. Its smell is mild. it is not as quick-to-smell as adulterated. It smells like coconut itself

Feel: Pure coconut oil is a lighter oil when you feel it with you fingers. Since adulterated oil contains a mixture cheap vegetable oil and coconut flavor, it would feel heavier than pure coconut oil.

Color: One cannot visibly tell the color difference between pure and adulterated coconut oil. Typically, pure coconut oil is liquid at room temperature and solid at cold temperature, usually in an air-conditioned room or very cold weather condition. Coconut oil can either be colorless or pale yellow depending or how mature the coconut is and what extraction process is used.

Generally, virgin coconut oil is very safe, highly nutritious. One has to be sure about the purity of the coconut oil purchased.
